For some written responses students are allowed to revise, edit, and resubmit their work. After looking over my feedback students can take the initiative to send a meeting request to sit down and go over the paper together. I ask them to come with their specific questions and goals they want to tackle when it comes to their writing. We talk through the paper together while workshopping a few sentences, and the student will submit revisions usually in 3-5 days.
For some, the initial goal of going through the revision process is to raise their grade. However, after our meetings I’ve found students getting more excited and feel empowered by the revision process and looking beyond their grade. Positive feedback centering on how their writing is becoming more clear, thoughtful and engaging, goes much further to fostering a respectful student-teacher relationship than simply rewarding them with a higher grade. I’m happy to see students advocate for themselves and leave our meetings feeling more confident in their writing.
